Sitting all day could kill you!

Sitting all day At a Desk is Not a great Idea and standing desks Could be the healthier alternative.

Picture
Picture
According to a recent advisory from the American Heart Association, the ill effects of sitting for long hours during the day cannot be negated by any amount of physical activity. Even going for a brisk run will not do much.

Some of the negative effects of prolonged sitting are:
- Increased diabetic risk
- Increased risk of heart problems
- Weight gain
- Back and spine problems

Here is where (drum roll)...the standing desk steps in. A 21st century revolutionary piece of office furniture that is changing the way people work. The standing desk has a reputation for keeping productivity levels high and staff smiling through the work day.

So how is the standing desk a solution? Is standing all day healthier than sitting all day?
The key is not to keep standing all day, because prolonged standing has its own negative effects on health and well being
Picture
The solution is to alternate between periods of standing and sitting that provides a healthy balance and keeps the ill effects of continuous sitting at bay.  This eases the load and stress on our backs, feet and spine.

Our standing desk mats like the OZONE, SUREFOOT and ARMOURSTEP are the perfect companions to the trend setting, healthier standing desks. These anti-fatigue mats make easy for your feet and back, adding to the benefits of a standing desk.

We had a blog post in 2014 on standing desks, which was a time the standing desk was a relatively new concept. But now, after 3 years we can see that it is definitely catching on in New Zealand. The evidence lies in the fact that some of our standing desk mat range have been in great and ever increasing demand.

Don't wait to make the switch to standing desks! The benefits are proven and are worth the investment in these desks and standing desk mats.

If you love cats and are in Auckland, then the Cat Lounge is the place to visit for “purr” bliss. Maybe have a coffee, too. And the quality matting that you’ll walk on was supplied by NZMATS.COM.

Cat Lounge Exterior
PictureFor the love of cats. Mike with one of the cat mates.
The 17 cats, mostly rescued, are very much at home at the cafe and have no problems with all the attention from the patrons of the cafe. They all have very interesting names – Midnight, Xanadu, Smudge and Jazz for example – and are very well behaved.
When Mike Jones and Vicky Chapman opened up the Cat Lounge at Hillcrest in November last year, they had an almost unprecedented 500 bookings in the very first two days. The Cat Lounge is a place for ailurophiles or felinophiles (the jargon for cat lovers) to relax, unwind, have a coffee and baked treats and cuddle the cats.

Adele, from NZMATS.COM visited the Cat Lounge, Auckland, to see how the mats that we had supplied were working for them. Vicky said that the mats were doing a great job and were a worthwhile investment to keep the floors clean.

Stepping into the 470 sqm shop would result in a feeling of bliss and euphoria for fashion buffs. This ex-Mitre10 turned clothing store, the brainchild of Louise Clark, collects and sells pre-loved clothing, accessories and furniture. The Birkenhead located store has a “no-waste, community driven philosophy” and is a great place to shop for well priced clothing and furniture. Sometimes, one could find designer labels too, at a bargain price! A neat little store that is worth checking out! The store was featured in the April 2016 issue of the monthly North Shore magazine, Channel (Issue 64, P71). The store is looking for volunteers!
The NZMATS.COM Connection:
Louise was looking for an anti fatigue mat that would help the person manning the counter to stand long hours without stress on the spine and feet. Adele recommended the Ozone Anti Fatigue mat and it was delivered to the store. Louise had looked around for a custom sized mat and couldn’t get one till she had called NZMATS.COM. Adele helped her get the mat exactly in the size that she had wanted and she was happy with the result. We visited the store to find out how the mat was working for them and we were cheerfully greeted by Chloe, who had stepped in behind the counter in Louise’s absence. She was full of praise for the Ozone mat and said that it was great to have the mat that  relieves stress on the feet and back.

Prevent slips and falls on wet floors!

Where there are wet floors, there is a high risk of slips and falls. We are talking about changing room floors for pools and showers. Anti slip matting that drains easily and helps keep wet feet off the floor is the best solution to keep such slip prone areas safe for everyone.
Picture
Tube Matting and TubeMat Grip are the two best matting products for such unique applications. We recently supplied the Auckland Blues with these safety mats to use around their plunge pools and changing rooms. The boys can relax without the risk of slipping on wet floors that can lead to off the field injuries, which are a no-no for rugby legends in the making!

Entrance Mats and Trip Hazards: Don’t get floored by a cheap mat. Literally.

4/11/2015

Don’t let your mat be a trip hazard!!!

Get a good quality mat that will lay flat without its edging curling up.

Picture
Cheap quality mats are cheap because they are made from inferior materials. They look like premium mats right out of the wrapping but they fail to do what they are supposed to do – lie flat and trap dirt and moisture. Over time and use, these mats tend to break and their edging start to curl up. This poses a very dangerous tripping hazard and can cause serious injury.
We have had people tell us how their mats curl up on the edges and how frustratingly poor their mats are, in terms of performance and durability. We recommended and supplied premium quality mats like the Classic Plus and our welcome mats/ logo mats, that are the best products on the NZ market. Our customers have been extremely happy with our matting products and services because they have got the best quality guaranteed and long lasting product.
Picture
The Classic Plus is our best selling mat for all the right reasons
  • These are virtually “indestructible” under normal use and can easily last 3-5 years with proper care and maintenance.
  • Highly water absorbent and effective dirt trap.
Low profile and anti slip rubber backing to minimise the possibility of the mat becoming a tripping hazard.
  • Easy to clean – Vacuum or Launder.
  • Range of colours to add branding or to increase visibility.
Entrance matting is supposed to keep dirt and moisture at the door, to prevent people from slipping over on a wet day or from bringing muck onto expensive flooring. Never buy a cheap mat that doesn’t actually save you money in the long run. Compare the cost of a cheap mat with costs that could arise out of people falling over – it’s just not worth it.

Prolonged standing can kill productivity and injure staff! Anti-Fatigue mats are the answer.

28/9/2015

Picture
This is what prolonged standing does to your staff.
Today, a large number of workplaces in the industrial sectors may contribute to occupational injuries in the workforce, if there is no proper awareness or genuine interest in occupational health and safety. These injuries have adverse effects –  direct medical costs and indirect losses in wages and productivity.
Several risk factors associated with occupational injuries have been identified and the focus is on prolonged standing. Plenty of process jobs performed at workstations will require the worker to be in a standing position. Of course, this is the practical working position for operating heavy equipment, handling materials, because the processes require frequent movements and large degree of freedom. When these process jobs are nearly impossible to perform in the sitting position, the workers have to stand throughout their working hours. This also includes staff working at standing desks or standing workstations.
This prolonged standing can cause
  • General discomfort
  • Muscle fatigue, especially in the lower extremities
  • Back aches
This, in turn, leads to
  • Psychological fatigue
  • Decline of alertness
  • Lack of mental concentration
  • Reduced motivation
  • Workplace accidents
  • Increased medical spending
The effects of prolonged standing, in the long run, would lead to decrease in performance, low productivity and efficiency, increased medical costs and demotivated staff.
Providing proper surfaces that support the weight of the body and take the strain of the feet and back of the staff is the most efficient way to deal with this necessary evil a.k.a the standing position.
Investing in a high quality anti-fatigue mat like the Ozone, Resort, Armour Step, Deck Plate and Surefoot or standing desk mats would go a long way in ensuring consistent productivity and increased staff energy levels.

Mouse potatoes!! What are they??
A new variant of the vegetable?  A potato bitten by mice? A new flavour of chips?
No!!
It is us, homo sapiens!
Most of our modern day jobs involve spending hours in front of the computer screen and this dependence on computers have made us “mouse potatoes”. Just like the TV produced a few couch potatoes.
Picture
This calls for use of healthy working practices like taking scheduled breaks, right postures, use of anti-fatigue mats at workstations and standing desks to ensure good staff health and productivity.
Don’t take your health too lightly. It has got serious implications – be it the quality of work  or even on the quality of life.
Talk to us to know how the risks of fatigue and postural injuries can be minimised with anti fatigue mats.http://nzmats.co.nz/products/standing-desk-mats/

Do You Hire Contractors? – Safety Onus on Companies in NZ

24/6/2014

Companies hiring contractors face law changes placing the responsibility for contractors’ health and safety squarely with them as workplace injuries rise in Canterbury.
Health and safety reforms are currently progressing through Parliament.
The following article by Alan Wood published today (24th June 2014) on Stuff Business discussed the importance of these changes and business owners need to ensure they are doing everything possible to comply with the upcoming law changes, ideally before they are even made official.
Picture
Canterbury bosses were last night to be briefed on the accountability of leaders at a project launch by the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum.
The event was hosted by the Institute of Directors whose chief executive William Whittaker said upcoming law changes would see more safety responsibility on chief executives and managing directors.
“Under the forthcoming act, people conducting a business undertaking have a responsibility for contractors.”
Now the Canterbury rebuild was underway it was of concern that workplace accidents within the reconstruction appeared to be on the rise, Safety Forum executive director Julian Hughes said.

Picture
“There’s an increasing number of injuries occurring. Fortunately there haven’t been, and I don’t know the exact number on this, many serious injuries.”
How much of that increase was due to the ramping up of the rebuild was still being looked at by the forum.
Hughes said that under the impending Health and Safety Reform Bill there will be a “clearer” responsibility on the ultimate or top company employing the contractors or contracting firm.
The Pike River coal mine tragedy of 2010 revealed a shortfall in safety regulation in New Zealand.
The forestry industry and Christchurch’s rebuild were other sectors where health and safety issues have been highlighted in recent years.
In the case of Pike, 13 of the 29 miners killed in a series of explosions were contractors.
Contractors also feature heavily in the 75 or so workers killed each year in dangerous industries.
Even in mid-2010 before the Pike disaster there was clear evidence that “our performance as a nation wasn’t good enough” leading to the forum being set up, Hughes said.
Labour Minister Simon Bridges has said the bill would play a major role in meeting the target of reducing New Zealand’s workplace injury and death toll by 25 per cent by 2020.
But Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend said so far Christchurch had a good health and safety record in the rebuild, with contractors and businesses having bought into a Canterbury rebuild safety charter.

“This has been a transition from health and safety being . . . an add-on to day to day business activity to now health and safety being mainstreamed into every part of business. That’s been a big change,” Townsend said.
WorkSafe director Don Stock said the workplace health and safety regulator and the forum were targeting chief executives to step up and develop safety initiatives with contractors.
WorkSafe and other organisations were looking to replicate the safe building standards of London Olympics venues in Christchurch.

“It’s really important that we treat it like [the] London Olympics. [It is a] massive construction project, a massive potential for fatalities and for serious harm injuries. I think this group is out there to make sure that those statistical probabilities don’t come true in the rebuild.”
Stock said on top of the 75 fatal workplace accidents each year there were another estimated 600-900 people who died from workplace health issues and exposures.
“The biggest one for example is asbestos. Last year we had 150 people die from asbestos exposure.”

Stand Up Desks – Are they really Healthier and will the trend continue?

20/5/2014

Picture
Picture
he trend towards ‘Stand-Up’ offices is strong in New Zealand as it is elsewhere and there are definitely some merits to standing as opposed to sitting at your desk. Stand up desks are heralded to boost mood and alertness and to help prevent health issues. There is a lot of controversy over whether it is better for health or not and there are both strong opponents and strong proponents for this increasing trend.

Proponents argue that too much sitting down shaves an average of three years off life expectancy. The so-called ‘sitting epidemic’ is growing in awareness just as the dangers of sun damage did in the previous decades. The health risks associated with too much sitting are weight gain and a large number of other health issues, like heart problems, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dangerous blood clots and some musculo-skeletal conditions – excessive sitting increases the risk of early death.

On the other side of the coin, opponents of the standing desks argue that standing increases torso muscle activity and spinal disc pressure, increases the risk of varicose veins, increases the risk of carotid artery disease and increases the load on the heart.  So what is the answer?

The answer, in our opinion, actually lies somewhere in between. Medical professionals and researchers argue that discomfort and fatigue are clearly associated with both prolonged sitting and prolonged standing and, in the ideal world, we would stand for periods of time at a ‘stand up desk’ and, when fatigued, sit for periods of time also, alternating between them to get the best of both worlds.

It is important to check your posture constantly and move around, whether you sit or stand at work, because standing all day can be as bad as prolonged sitting. A 2005 longitudinal study in Denmark found that the incidence of hospitalizations due to varicose veins was higher among those who stand or walk at least 75 percent of their time at work. The risk of hardening of the arteries was dramatically greater as well, according to a 2000 study conducted by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley. Of course, nurses and factory workers have known this for some time, but it seems to be largely forgotten in the stand-up-desk trend.
If you are going to take advantage of the benefits a stand-up desk can offer, authors on this topic recommend you follow your body’s cues. If you begin to feel lethargic or your neck or shoulders bother you, shift to standing. If your legs or feet later begin to ache, elevate one foot or switch to a chair. And do your best to move around a lot more in general — doing shoulder rolls, shaking out your limbs, walking to chat instead of e-mailing, taking the stairs or visiting a water fountain down the hall are all good ways to decrease the risk of health issues.
